ORSIM v2.1.0 Major Update

This update adds new functionality and fixes for your previous version of the ORSIM Bronchoscopy Simulator as detailed in the What's New section at the end of this page.

Please follow one of the two options below to download the update onto your internet-connected computer. Note that your ORSIM Laptop should not be connected to the internet to perform this update. A USB drive will be required to complete the transfer to your ORSIM Laptop.

Please select one of the two install options below:

1. Start by downloading the Windows USB-Drive setup program by clicking download below.

Download

2. Once the USB-Drive setup program has been downloaded, you should run it; the method will vary depending on the Web browser you are using. Tips on running from some common browsers are as follows:

Chrome: In the lower-left of your screen, once the download is complete click the up-arrow beside it and click "Open" from the menu. If prompted with a warning dialog, select [Run].

Firefox: In the dialog box that appears, click [Save File], then wait for the download arrow in the top-right corner of your screen to turn blue. Once this happens, click the download arrow then click on the USB_Maker program. If prompted with a warning dialog, select [Run].

Edge: In the bar that appears in the bottom-center of your screen, select [Run], then when asked "Are you sure" in the same bar after the download completes, select [Run] again. If prompted with a warning dialog, select [Run].

Internet Explorer: In the bar that appears in the bottom-center of your screen, select [Run]. When the download is finished, if you are told "a file of this type could harm your computer" click [Actions], then in the dialog box click "More Options" at the bottom, then [Run Anyway].

3. You may be prompted by one or both of the following Windows security precautions protecting you from files downloaded from the internet:

- If you are prompted by a window with the option "More Info" click "More info" on the left, then click [Run anyway].
- If you are prompted by a window like the one below, click [OK].

4. The ORSIM "USB Maker" application will now start and lead you through the next steps of the process. To complete this stage you will need an empty USB drive which will be used to transfer the update to your ORSIM Laptop.
Follow the brief instructions on screen:

5. Once the Orsim USB Maker has prepared your USB Drive with the new update, you should then plug the USB Drive into your ORSIM Laptop.

6. After starting your ORSIM Laptop, double-click on the "Orsim Tools" icon:

7. In the Orsim Tools window, double-click on "Orsim Updater":

8. The Orsim Updater will find the appropriate module on the USB drive that you have inserted and start the installer for you. Your installer will then guide you through the rest of the process.

- If the Orsim Updater tells you that it could not find the USB drive, make sure your USB stick is inserted properly and try again.
- If the Orsim Updater tells you that it could not find an appropriate update, please ensure that you have correctly completed step 4 above.

1. Start by downloading the Update by clicking download below.

2. Please select a new, or newly formatted USB drive which has been scanned for viruses, to reduce the chances of malware or viruses being transferred to your ORSIM laptop. Additionally, the USB stick you use must not contain any other ORSIM updates. Plug this into a free USB port on your current computer.

3. Copy the installer you have downloaded into the "root" of your USB drive, ie: not inside a folder on the USB drive. Do not rename the installer; it must keep its original file name.

The method used to copy the installer to the USB drive varies greatly depending on your computers operating system and how it is setup. Typically:

On MacOS: Open Finder, locate the installer you have just downloaded (in the "Downloads" folder and with a name starting with "Orsim"), then drag it into your USB drive, which will usually be displayed with its name under "Devices" on the left hand side of the screen:

On Windows: Open Windows File Explorer, locate the installer you have just downloaded (usually in the "Downloads" folder by default and with a name starting with "Orsim"), then drag'n'drop or copy/paste it into your USB drive, which will usually be displayed with its name and a drive-letter near the bottom of the list on the left hand side of the screen:

4. After the copy is complete, eject the USB drive and plug it into your ORSIM Laptop.

5. After starting your ORSIM Laptop, double-click on the "Orsim Tools" icon:

6. In the Orsim Tools window, double-click on "Orsim Updater":

7. That’s it! – the Orsim Updater will find the appropriate update on the USB drive that you have inserted and start the installer for you. Your installer will then guide you through the rest of the process.

- If the Orsim Updater tells you that it could not find the USB drive, make sure your USB stick is inserted properly and try again.

- If the Orsim Updater tells you that it could not find an appropriate update, check:
The update file must be in the “root” of the USB drive, ie: not inside a folder.
◦ The module file must keep the same file name as you originally downloaded it with.
◦ There must only be one module file on the USB drive at a time.

What's New - v2.1.0:

  • The ORSIM Bronchoscopy Simulator now supports six languages: English, German, Russian, Spanish, Japanese, and French. Your preferred language can now be selected using the language icon in the lower-right of the menu screen and can be set individually for each user profile.
  • Lung anatomy has been updated in all scenarios based on CT scan data and input from multiple expert reviewers. This allows learners to more easily and precisely recognize regular anatomy as well as different pulmonological conditions.
  • Updates to the multi-choice questioning system to allow for multiple correct answers, continuing to review pathology while answering questions, and answering using the handpiece rather than the mouse so the user need not change hand positions to answer in the middle of a scenario. This functionality is used extensively in the new "Pulmonology I" training module which is available separately.
  • Updates to the "Collision Severity" measurement system to more accurately measure potential damage to the patient based on collision angle, speed, and tissue type.
  • The lever sensitivity on the handset has been updated to match a real bronchoscope, where moving the lever in the center of its range moves the scope tip less than when moving the lever at the extents of its range.
  • Numerous minor updates to performance and stability.
  • Latest firmware update as of this release date (r70765) is included.
  • Updated user guide and training videos.

What's New - v2.0.6:

  • New feature allowing deletion of unneeded user profiles from the user list.
  • A fix for a driver issue in some E560 laptops where the simulator could sometimes become unresponsive and then shutdown the laptop once a scenario was finished.
  • Updates required to support the next generation of ORSIM hardware.

What's New - v2.0.5:

  • Considerable speed and performance optimizations for the whole of the 3D simulation portion of the ORSIM software.
  • A fix for E540 laptops running Windows 7 to correctly set the screen resolution when running the simulator.
  • A fix for a reported issue where the keyboard and mouse could become unresponsive during a scenario under certain circumstances.
  • Updates required to support future firmware versions which will run on your ORSIM hardware.

What's New - v2.0.4:

  • Handling of a Windows issue where Windows could take keyboard and mouse control away from the ORSIM application and not restore it under some circumstances.
  • Handling of a Windows issue where Windows could attempt to change the size or scaling of the display causing problems with the display of the simulator.
  • Handling of a Windows issue where Windows could "rename" the video devices when the laptop battery is running low, causing problems starting the simulator.
  • Documentation clarifications.

What's New - v2.0.3:

  • Functionality has been added to allow for the addition of new Training Modules which can be purchased separately.
  • Optimizations were made to loading speed.
  • Optimizations to the simulated physics and ability to push into various tissue with the bronchoscope.
  • Minor updates to the "Introduction to Paediatrics" scenarios.
  • Improvements to the simulated lighting through the bronchoscope camera.
  • Fixes for anatomy labels showing when they shouldn't.
  • User Interface changes related to loading recorded sessions.
  • Fine-tuning of scoring for some scenarios.
  • Enhancements to the "Orsim Updater" tool to make it more user-friendly.
  • Fixed an issue related to the placement of the green cross on the Lung Map in Paediatric scenarios.
  • Updates to lung anatomy naming in the left upper lobe for both adult and paediatric patients.
  • Lighting changes related to scope camera "white-out" in the lungs of paediatric patients.
  • Fixes to menus where clicking in white space areas could have unexpected results.
  • Updates to the ORSIM User Guide to cover new functionality.
  • Addition of a new set of five training videos accessible from the Windows desktop.
  • Updates to "shader cache", which could previously have resulted in a one-off pause during a simulation.
  • Fix for an issue which could previously result in scores below 0% being awarded.
